Reactions Division Overview:
The Reactions Division is responsible for researching new reactions to be used for the stopping mechanism of the car. We perform experiments in the lab to study the kinetics of the reactions being tested and determine the chemical concentrations required to obtain a time range ideal for the competition. If you are interested in chemical reactions, research, and lab work, this is the division for you! Joining Reactions is also a great way to learn/practice your lab skills, especially if you are taking any lab courses!
Current Design and Next Steps:
Recently, we have been experimenting with what we call the Chameleon Reaction. This is a redox reaction where potassium permanganate is reduced and dextrose is oxidized. Potassium permanganate is reduced twice: first from an oxidation state of +7 to +6, then from +6 to +4. This change in oxidation state causes multiple colour changes, like how a chameleon changes colours! The reaction starts off purple, then turns blue, green, yellow and finally orange. The colour sensor tells the car to stop once the solution turns orange.
Gain Skills and Experience:
We have been preparing a training program to teach new members everything they need to know for working on the team! We are preparing a comprehensive resource that you can refer to if you have any questions about working in the lab, as well as a few training experiments so you can practice your skills before diving into Reactions lab work. So, no matter what your background or amount of lab experience, you will receive lots of training and support to help you feel confident about working in the lab!
